Jampionships 2012

The 2012 World Jam Awards will get underway soon. The search will commence in May 2012 for the "Berry" Best Jam Maker with the overall winner being "picked" as World Jampion!

After the success of the World's first "Jampionships" in 2011, "Love To Eat" the food tourism initiative brought to the boil by Blairgowrie and East Perthshire, will announce details of this year's event in May to coincide with the beginning of the local Strawberry harvest.

In 2012 "Jampions" will be sought for 3 flavours of jam: Raspberry, Strawberry and Blackcurrant and will enter at Homemade and Artisan (small professional producer). There will also be a category to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee. Looking for Jubilee Jam fit for a Queen.

Winners will be announced at the Dundee Flower and Food Festival in September.

Choosing your raspberry? Peter Thomson from Thomas Thomson Fruit Growers in Blairgowrie

Choosing your raspberry?

Glen Ample is our recommended jam fruit! We went to Peter Thomson from Thomas Thomson Fruit Growers in Blairgowrie for a little piece of advice on different raspberry varieties. Some people may be surprised to learn how long the raspberry season is- lasting from late June until October. Plenty of time for tasting and making!

From Peter…

We will start rasps with the variety Glen Ample in late June, followed by Octavia in late July and Cardinal from August until October. The best for jam of these is probably Glen Ample, and it is Scottish origin.

Grown by others in the industry, the most common variety is Maravilla, but would be no better for jam-making - it is popular because it is big and lasts for longer when picked. The best for flavour is Tulameen, with only a slightly later season that Glen Ample, but there is not much grown now, and for jam, the sweet flavour would be masked by all the sugar. Glen Doll and Glen Fyne are other local varieties with good flavour, and should make good jam.
